INTERMEDIATE

These are the official NRA certified firearms safety courses taught according to NRA guidelines by NRA Certified Firearms Instructors and NRA Certified Training Counselors. With the exception of the adults-only Personal Protection courses, all of the courses are intended for both adults and youth. Courses are available for those that are new to firearms, individuals wanting a refresher course, concealed carry and instructor training.

What is the range session like in our NRA Basic Pistol Course?

Let's go through the steps together and find out right now!

Step #1

RANGE SAFETY BRIEFING
& EXPLANATION OF FIRING POSITION

After a presentation on range procedures and safety, which takes place in the classroom, we conduct a full range briefing again at the range itself.

This is done without firearms present as a safety review and to make sure that all of the students can hear and understand the instructors and range safety officers even with their hearing protection in place. The instructors then explain the shooting position that the students are about to perform.

Step #2

PRACTICING THE POSITION
WITHOUT A FIREARM

An important part of NRA teaching methodology is the order and sequence of how information is presented and a skill is taught.

By breaking down seemingly complex operations into smaller "bites", our trained NRA Certified Instructors help students understand what is expected of them and how to perform each step in the structured learning process of the course.

YOU CAN DO LEARN HOW TO SHOOT SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY REGARDLESS OF YOUR AGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH FIREARMS !!

Step #3

PRACTICING THE POSITION
WITH A FIREARM

Now it's time to introduce the unloaded firearm into the newly-learned shooting position. With no live ammunition present on the tables or near the firing line, students can concentrate on safely handling the firearm without starting to anticipate the actual firing of their pistol which comes later.

AS YOU CAN SEE, IT'S ALL STEP-BY-STEP SO THAT THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE BUILDS ON THE PREVIOUS ACTIVITY.

Step #4

TIME TO LOAD ONE ROUND
OF LIVE AMMUNITION

With beginning shooters, it's important to progress slowly and the first series of shooting exercises are performed with one round of ammunition at a time.

This helps the student focus on the fundamentals of pistol shooting that they learned in class.

We're almost ready for that FIRST SHOT !!

Step #5

FIRING THE FIRST ROUND !!

Since the beginning students have practiced the position without a firearms and then with an unloaded firearm, they are now ready to take their first shot under the close supervision of the instructors and range safety officers.

By taking it one step at a time, students are now able to focus on the shooting fundamentals: Position, Grip, Breath Control, Sight Alignment, Trigger Squeeze and Follow-Through.

Step #6

REVIEW, COACHING & ADJUSTMENT

Students that are brand new to firearms have an opportunity work individually with one of our NRA Certified Instructors during the range exercises to enhance their learning experience.

Step #8

CHECKING THE RESULTS !!

The NRA Basic Pistol Course focuses on safety and beginning marksmanship without all of the pressure that beginning shooters sometimes feel when they first encounter the activity.

Instead of using "bulls eye", numeric scoring targets, the NRA requires instructors to use non-scoring targets such as a piece of blank paper or the 9" paper plates shown here. This allows the student to concentrate on learning the fundamentals without concern for their "score", etc.

YOU CAN DO THIS AND IT'S FUN!

The NRA Basic Pistol Course is intended for adults and youth that are NEW to firearms. It is also a good choice for adults who may consider themselves "new again" after a long period away from firearms. The course is a complete and thorough introduction to basic firearms safety covering both revolvers and semi-automatic handguns.

Course content includes a detailed discussion of the components, ammunition, fundamentals of shooting marksmanship, how to select/buy the right revolver or semi-automatic, proper cleaning techniques, pistol sports/activities, and a discussion of other available training plus up to four hours on the range.

If you have a young person in your life that has expressed an interest in firearms and learning how to shoot, this course is a gift of firearms safety and the lifelong enjoyment of a sport that is built upon personal responsibility.

We have taught many youth in the 10 to 17 age bracket and it is very positive experience to see a young person embrace firearms safety and come away with the proper attitude about firearms. In short, "kids get firearms safety" and we believe strongly that all youth should be taught this very important subject.

Our classes have multiple instructors present for increased safety and to ensure that each student has the best possible learning experience. We create a safe, supportive and fun learning environment for everyone - men, women, boys and girls!

Our instructors teach from a very positive, "you can do this" attitude which is reflected in the fact that all students are treated equally and with respect. If for any reason, you are not pleased with our course during the first four hours in the evening session, you may request a full refund. We guarantee that you will not only be satisfied but also impressed with our commitment to excellence in firearms training. When evaluating other firearms training providers, ask them if they will guarantee that you will like their class!

The NRA Basic Pistol Course does happen to be accepted as the minimum training requirements for the concealed handgun permit issued in Colorado, Wyoming, Florida and many other states. However, it is not designed to be a CCW course and it does not include any discussion of CCW issues, laws or the use of deadly force in self-defense.

The NRA does not allow instructors to present CCW-related information in the NRA Basic Pistol course and doing so may be a violation of NRA rules. Some instructors position this course as their CCW course which is unfortunate because it is designed for beginning shooters.

Some students take this course and then go on to take a more focused CCW course from us so as to better prepare themselves for concealed carry.
