Colorado residents with a concealed carry permit issued in Colorado may legally carry a concealed handgun in Colorado and up to 29 other states states. Vermont does not require a permit and is not included in these totals but is shown on the map below.
Even though concealed carry permits are issued at the county level in Colorado, they are effectively Colorado permits with respect to acceptance throughout Colorado and in certain other states.
By adding a second CCW permit from Utah, which is available to residents of any state, you'll be able to carry in up to 33 states. For Colorado residents, the Utah permit adds carry coverage in WA, MN, OH & VA which do not accept the Colorado permit.
Colorado residents MUST obtain a Colorado permit to carry in Colorado.
As of September 2009, the Colorado permit may be accepted in the states shown on the following map in green. Such acceptance is subject to change at any time and it remains the responsibility of the permit holder to verify acceptance before carrying concealed.

FLASH UPDATES REGARDING CONCEALED CARRY INFORMATION ...
12/21/09 - PROFIRE USA embraces the requirement of a live-fire range session for ALL students seeking a concealed handgun permit. We have always required students without prior handgun shooting experience to complete a range session which exceeded the circa 2003 state requirements. Unfortunately, there are other training providers that routinely teach inadequate "coffee & donut" classes. Thus, we have decided to take a leadership role in this area and support a change in Colorado law to require a live-fire range session for all permit applicants.
08/30/09 - Nebraska will now begin accepting certain other permits carried by visitors. Students are urged to read both this NRA-ILA article and the Nebraska bill: LB-430.
07/1/09 - Nevada will no longer recognize permits from Utah or Florida.
02/19/09 - Wyoming backed off on dropping reciprocity with 14 states pending further review of each state's permit requirements and statutes. They may change again at any time.
02/09/09 - The Wyoming Attorney General decided to drop acceptance of the permit from 14 states including Colorado and Florida on 3/1/09. Wyoming continues to accept the Utah permit.

Some course providers are running short-cut, 3 or 4-hour classes as their permit course. A quality concealed carry pre-licensing course takes at least a full day to deliver properly and why anyone would believe that it can be done well in less time is just incredible to us.
Take the PROFIRE USA Concealed Handgun Permit Pre-Licensing Course which runs a full 8 to 9 hours in the classroom followed by one of two live-fire range sessions. We urge our students to complete the companion course, IDH-202 Intro to Defensive Handgun, which consists of 4 hours on the range.
What About a Beginner's Course?
If you ARE a handgun beginner, take the excellent NRA Basic Pistol Course which runs five hours in the classroom and 3 to 4 hours on the range. If not, take our focused concealed carry course. It's that simple.
Some course providers, like us, are teaching the official NRA Basic Pistol Course the right way according to its lesson plan and that is good.
Others are slicing and dicing NRA Basic Pistol to make it into something it is not as concealed carry issues, laws and related information is not allowed in that course. This may be a violation of NRA policy and can be reported by students in those courses to the NRA.
NRA Certified Instructors may add a separate session on concealed carry after the NRA Basic Pistol Course is finished.
What about NRA First Steps Pistol?
NRA First Steps Pistol is a safety orientation and NOT a course according to the NRA definition. As such, it may not meet the training requirements in Colorado for the concealed carry permit which uses the word course.
Aside from that, the NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation is a subset of the NRA Basic Pistol Course and it is intended for students who are not yet ready for the full beginner's course.
Multiple Permits? Multi-State Carry?
Let's cut through the myths and legends here about multiple permits and multi-state carry!
It will take a few minutes of your time to ready this information but you will find out that some course providers may be attempting to trick you into taking their course while we give you the straight facts so that you can make an informed decision.
Many states require the permit holder to be a resident of the issuing state. Colorado is one of them and residents here MUST have a permit issued in Colorado in order to carry in Colorado.
Both the Utah and Florida permits cover more states when carried by a RESIDENT of that state. When carried by a non-resident, the Utah permit is accepted in 27 states of which four do not accept the Colorado permit. The Florida permit is accepted in 26 states when carried by a non-resident of Florida and two of these states do not accept the Colorado permit.
Thus, the best value in a "second permit" for Colorado residents is the Utah permit which adds four additional states to the carry coverage of the Colorado permit.
In contrast, the Florida permit adds only three additional states and it costs a lot more than the Utah permit to get and over 10 times as much to renew.
The above coverage map is intended only as a beginning reference point as permit reciprocity or other acceptance is subject to change at any time without notice. It remains the responsibility of the permit holder to verify acceptance of their permit, as well as to obtain carry restriction information, for each state in which they intend to carry BEFORE doing so.
In addition, the above coverage map is NOT to be used "both ways" in that it has been created from the perspective of the Colorado permits only. For example, the Colorado permit is accepted in the states coded as green as of the date when this map was created. That means the Colorado permit can be used in say Alabama. However, this DOES NOT mean that the Alabama can be used in all of the green states just because it is coded the same color. The colors on the above map apply only to this map on this page and ONLY for the Colorado permit.
Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire accept the Colorado permit. These four states also accept the Utah permit ONLY when carried by a Utah resident. These four states have the same type of residency restriction for all out of state permits that they accept. Other states may adopt this restriction. Kansas DOES NOT currently accept the Utah permit under any circumstances.
CO Senate Bill 07-034, which became law in July 2007, requires residency of the issuing state in order to use an out of state permit in Colorado. The permit holder must be a resident of the issuing state AND that permit must be accepted in Colorado under reciprocity or other acceptance. Thus, Colorado residents may no longer use an out of state, non-resident permit to carry in Colorado and residents of other states must have a "home" state permit that is valid in Colorado.
Special Note for those Considering a Florida Permit
While the Florida permit is a good permit, it covers fewer states than the Utah permit when carried by a non-resident. When a resident of Colorado with a permit issued in Colorado obtains the Florida permit, it adds only Ohio and Virginia to their coverage. In contrast, the Utah permit adds four additional states: Wyoming, Ohio, Virginia, Washington and Minnesota.
The Florida permit costs $117 to acquire and then $107 to renew every seven years compared to $65.25 for the Utah permit which renews every five years for $10.
Thus, the best "second permit" for those with a Colorado permit is the Utah permit and the savings grow with every renewal.
